When you have a web site with 100 pages of content and no other web site has that content, the search engines view this is a valuable resource. Your site is the only one with all of this great content about a specific topic. However, if you create a new web site and simply copy the exact same content (duplicated) then the search engines don't value either of the web sites as much. Now, you have two web sites that both have the same content and neither one can be considered an authority. Both web sites would suffer in the search results and give way to another web site with unique content.
